About The Pahar Trust

The Pahar Trust was established by two ex-servicemen of the Brigade of Gurkhas, Mr Tom Langridge MBE and Mr Chandrabahadur Gurung, who both served as Warrant Officers in the Queen's Gurkha Engineers. Both men wanted to help improve the poor standards of education found in Nepal's mountain region.

Since the first school, in the village of Pokhari Thok, was completed in 1991, thirty seven other schools have been built, the building of several other schools is currently underway. Furthermore the Trust has raised funds for and overseen the completion of various small community projects including the building of hostels for school pupils and the improvements of school facilities such as kitchens and playing fields.

Due to their expert skills, training, local knowledge and desire to improve the lives of Nepal's next generation, it was decided that ex-Gurkha officers would be employed to organise and oversee school building projects.

After fifteen rewarding years of dedication to The Pahar Trust Mr Langridge MBE retired as Chairman of The Trust in 2005. His vision of providing modern learning facilities, enabling the children of Nepal to receive a high standard of education, will continue to be appreciated for many years to come. Following Tom's retirement, long serving trustee and fundraiser, Mr Howard Green MBE, took over the position of Chairman

Following the significant fund raising efforts of friends of the PTN, the Trust has strengthened it's links with two villages where schools have been established through projects that provide a consistent and accessible water supply for the village. These projects have vastly improved village life.

An important element of the Trust is the school Friendship Link Scheme. Friendship links between schools in the UK and Nepal were established by the Pahar Trust to enable children from both nations to learn more about each other's cultures and to forge friendships which would endure over time.

The Trust aims to find link schools in the UK for all the schools that it builds in Nepal. Schools in the UK and Nepal are encouraged to maintain a strong relationship, in many schools the respective partner school is an important part of daily school life.

“More than one hundred twenty children from the Sildujure V.D.C and the neighbouring V.D.Cs are now able to receive education up to the secondary level this year. Looking at the past five years since the high school was established, the school has shown remarkable progress. It is clear that the help the Pahar Trust has provided has proved to be a ray of hope for the people of the Sildujure V.D.C. in bringing the light of knowledge among the people. We are all very grateful to the Pahar Trust for such great support.” - Head teacher Chhachok School,

“I have just passed School Leaving Certificate,. if the Pahar Trust did not provide school here I would not get the chance to study, I was unable to go Pokhara, the city, to study because my family is poor economical condition. We got lovely school building therefore the Pahar Trust remains in our heart and at every moment throughout our whole life.” Bhes Kumari Gurung student:- Tangting School

An original goal of the Trust was to provide schools for over 10,000 children, with new schools due to open in both the East and West of Nepal soon and well over 7000 benefiting already, we continue to move closer to this goal. We thank greatly all the groups and individuals who have given their time and money to help enable this success.
